Eliot Spitzer is probably the best known state attorney general in America. His hard-charging probes of biased stock research, shady mutual fund trading and bid-rigging in the insurance industry have made him a media star and the scourge of Wall Street. He was born June 10, 1959, to Bernard and Anne Spitzer, the youngest of their three children. He grew up in the posh Riverdale neighborhood located at the far northern end of New York City and attended exclusive private schools. He graduated from Princeton University and went on to Harvard Law School where he met his wife Silda Wall. They have three children.

After clerking for a federal judge and working at a prestigious Manhattan law firm, he became a state prosecutor and tackled mob influence in the garment industry. In 1998, he defeated incumbent state attorney general Dennis Vacco in one of the closest elections in New York history. He won reelection in 2002. As state attorney general, he has investigated some of the country’s largest corporate giants, including Merrill Lynch and 11 other investment banks, dozens of mutual fund companies, insurance behemoth American International Group (AIG) and all three of the country’s largest insurance brokers.
